I've been happily retired for eight plus years. People often ask what I do in my retirement. But few ever ask me the opposite: what am I not doing in my retirement. The later is, I believe, just as informative. So below are three things I'm no longer doing in my retirement.
First, not working. This one seems obvious. But for some, the idea of getting a pension while taking on another paying job (maybe less stressful?) is appealing. Whether a side hustle for pocket money or things to do, they are just changing jobs, in my view. Not retirement. Because, a paying job entails the boss, work schedule, and reporting - all the trimmings of work.
Next, not competing with anyone. Keeping up with the Jones is a hallmark of our insidious competing culture. Whether it's material possessions, vacation choices (frequencies & destinations), or similar status symbols, it's a forever and tiresome task. I'm perfectly content with my retirement style. There is no need for me to imitate or follow others. Let alone competing.
Third, not hurrying. Given no work obligations, I've more control of my schedule. Typically, I plan my appointments around the non-peak hours between the hours of 10AM and 2PM. No need to join the fight during the rush hour traffics (being there, done that, and don't care for it). So I shift my prime time to the less hurried periods.
What would you do or not do in retirement?
