The death has occurred of the Omu of Okpanam, Obi Martha Dunkwu (68). She was an avatar of sorts as she was the least anyone expected to ascend the ancient position of Omu, given her early life exposure to Western education and modern life. After twenty years as the highest titled female office holder in the Okpanam traditional institution, she is seen as a modernizer who brought glamour, panache and intelligence into an otherwise stead traditional institution.

No Mortuary For 'The Queen Mother'

According to her wishes, the Dunkwu family of Okpanam was digging her grave less than twenty four hours after her death. The traditional institution may have wished differently but her family is bent on fulfilling her prayers not to be put in the mortuary. Traditional burial rites will announced in due course, according to a family member who spoke to us.
