Today is Presidents Day, a federal holiday to honor George Washington, America's first president's birthday (Feb 22,1732). Later it was extended to include the 16th president Abraham Lincoln's birthday (Feb 12,1809). For one hundred and forty-five years, the holiday has been celebrated annually. What makes this year unusual?
Well, no president, sitting or former, has ever been indicted. Some came close (think Nixon). But none has actually faced the court. That's until former president Donald Trump. Who is the first in US history to be criminally charged. Not only he faces 91 charges across four separate cases, but Trump is the clear frontrunner in the Republican Presidential Primary this year.
So without a doubt, Mr. Trump represents a different brand of presidency. Something the American has never witnessed until 2016 when he took over the White House. And what an eight years it has been. On this Presiddents Day, President Washington and Lincoln, if alive, would shudder on how much the presidency has evolved.
Do you think it's Mr. Trump or the American people that has evolved?
