Creating a stay-at-home mom job description to outline the mom job role

Ever feel like being a stay-at-home parent is an all-encompassing, 24/7 job? It's the never-ending cycle of diapers, tantrums, and sleepless nights. It's a rollercoaster ride that can leave you feeling like you're juggling a thousand things at once with no clear direction. Listen, if you feel that in your bones, you're going to burn out. You are likely going to feel resentment and overwhelmed. We don't want that. Here's where the magic happens-clarity and teamwork. Enter the stay-at-home parent job description—the game-changing secret weapon that transforms this overwhelming chaos into a space of clarity, and teamwork. This ends up being good for the whole family (but it can come with growing pains, which we'll also discuss!)

The Crucial Role of a Job Description in Managing the Mental Load

Let's be real, mama—parenthood often feels like trying to assemble IKEA furniture without instructions. But guess what? Crafting a stay-at-home parent job description is like finding that missing manual. It's not just a list of tasks; it's your roadmap to sanity and purpose in the daily chaos. The goal here is to help you and your partner understand what falls under the "mom job role" and what falls into the "gray areas." Gray areas are the times and spaces that you and your partner are both "off the clock" of your job but, of course, not off-the-clock for parenting and home duties. The thing is, it should not all fall on the stay-at-home mom (or dad) all of the time. Having a clear understanding of what happens during those "working hours" and what the two of you split because, well, you're both parents, will minimize stress and resentment and build teamwork. That teamwork foundation is going to be vital for the rest of your parenting journey together.

Three Benefits of a Stay-At-Home Mom Job Description

Clarity and Purpose

Remember those days when you felt lost in the sea of diapers, feedings, and toddler tantrums? Been there, done that! The moment I sat down and defined my roles and responsibilities, it was like turning on a light in the dark. A job description gives you clarity on what's expected, helping you navigate the mommy maze with a little less confusion. It helps you to feel accomplished in your day-to-day life, as opposed to feeling like everything is on your plate all of the time, leaving little room to feel good about what you do get done.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Parenting is a team sport, and having a job description is like having a playbook. It's not just about you—it's about creating a shared understanding with your partner. When both of you know the game plan, it's a game-changer! Suddenly, you're not soloing this mission; you're part of a dynamic duo tackling parenthood together. This also makes it easier for you to both identify and carve out times for yourself, your hobbies, and social life, etc. Without a job description, many stay-at-home moms find they struggle to make that time for themselves because they have an "always the default parent" mentality.

After "Working Hours" Agreement

Let's talk about the "after working hours" deal. Crafting a job description isn't just about what happens when you're on the clock; it's also about setting expectations for that precious time after the kids are tucked in. It's your golden ticket to finding a balance that works for both of you. Dinner? Netflix? A hot bath? Yes, please! But not just for the one who "went to work." For both of you- because whether or not you left the house, you worked too. A mom's job role should not be about being on the clock at all times. You need a breather too- and everyone is better for it!

How to Create Your Own Stay-at-Home Mom Job Description

I actually created a whole PDF guide for you to walk through the process of creating your own stay-at-home mom job description. It covers these steps (and it's free to download):

  1. Why Create a Stay-at-Home Mom Job Description
  2. Braindump of the daily tasks to care for the baby and for the home (including the mental load)
  3. Braindump of the weekly or monthly tasks to care for the baby and for the home (again, including the mental load)
  4. How to organize the brain dump into categories: Mom job role OR Gray area needs (to be shared by both partners during "off work" hours
  5. How to write your own job description!

The Future is in Recognizing the Logistical, Mental, and Emotional Load of Motherhood

Thankfully, there is continually more conversation about the many facets of parenthood. We see increased coverage of the mental load and the unrealistic expectations that exist for both working moms and stay-at-home moms (and everything in between, because I see you too!) If we want to continue growing as families and as a society, it requires better communication and better teamwork. The experience we have in our own homes is so transformative and impacts every other facet of life- and it's worth working hard to make an experience that is empowering for everyone involved.
