| Daniella Bartfeld January 28 | Recently has the international debate been rekindled regarding what is referred to as "the two-state solution". But what is the real position of Fatah/PLO/PA in all this? The Palestinian side has no interest whatsoever in terminating the conflict - what Israelis refer to as "a negotiated end of claims" and what Palestinians refer to as "the conspiracy to liquidate the Palestinian cause". The only way the Palestinian side imagines the establishment of a Palestinian state next to Israel is through a forced unilateral Israeli withdrawal from all of Judea, Samaria and East Jerusalem, something which would indeed most severely exacerbate the conflict, lead to foreign Muslim countries to engage in major troop deployment in Judea and Samaria and following a major international war, inevitably full Israeli occupation of the entire Judea and Samaria. The Palestinians of course hope that such a war will lead to the destruction of Israel. The strategy is to first reverse "the naksa" (the 1967 "setback") and subsequently "the nakba" (the 1948 "disaster"). This of course is a pipe dream since absolutely no amount of foreign pressure may compel Israel to unilaterally expel 700 000 Israelis and retreat to the 1949 Jordanian-Israeli ceasefire lines, what former Israeli foreign minister Abba Eban referred to as "the Auschwitz lines". | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
