Spoilers for the mechanics of collectible missions in Ghostwire: Tokyo
Butch:
Moved things along and now my quest is "Follow KK's lead." Y'all there?
Did that, then honed my magpie skills. I've gotten good at souls, statues and cat toys, but something I can't figure out for love or money is the investigation notes. I know they're there because the shrines are all "Notes: 0/1" and stuff, but I CANNOT find any!
What am I doing wrong?
Feminina:
I believe we have both followed KK's lead. It goes...into the mists...
And yes, the notes are tough. I've stumbled across them in odd places, but if the cats aren't selling them, they're just...out there. There doesn't seem to be any way to get them to show up on the map, so you just have to get lucky, I guess. I am missing several myself.
At some point I might just start systematically wandering around using spectral vision and checking out everything that could be note-shaped (although it's tough because things look different from different angles), but this has not happened yet.
Maybe praying at the shrines? "I wish I could find what I'm looking for" if you've found everything else in an area? I haven't tried that.
Praying for health makes nether food appear. I'm not sure about praying for SP.
Loothound:
KK's notes can be pretty tricky. There are a lot of them in locations that you have to enter, as opposed to just being out in Tokyo, so I'm not sure that they show up in SpecterVision when you're just walking around. I know that there's one in the school from the Gutsy mission (that's what it's called now, for obvious reasons) that is super tricky to find since it's in a kind of hidden location. Other than that I'm not sure what to tell you. I do know that there are two magatama in the school zone that I absolutely cannot find, and it's bugging me.
By the way, I got the a Gutsy figurine from one of the vending machines and it's exactly as awesome as you'd think it is.
I think we've both done that mission. There's a point in the main story where it tells you that you kind of have to leave the main game area behind for a while to move on, and I was waiting until everything else was done before going there. There's a set of side missions that goes into the whole Rinko/Erica relationship that's pretty interesting.
Ah, praying at shrines… Now that I don't need to save money for KK notes and magatama I'm going to check out the odder options on those. Pray for world peace, wanting to meet a ninja, you know the big stuff. I really hope a ninja shows up.
Oh, ninjas! That reminds me about something. So, I think I mentioned wanting to be a ninja when I was a kid, so of course I watched all of the awesomely terrible Sho Kosugi ninja movies back in the 80s. When preparing for battle he would always do these hand gestures to sort of harness his mystical ninja powers, right, and THEY'RE THE SAME GESTURES THAT AKITO MAKES WHEN HE DOES HIS ETHER WEAVING THING! I actually had a poster of all of them once. They've all got names and everything. Major flashback moment when that realization hit me.
They're called the kuji-in, and they come from an esoteric Shinto mystic tradition…
Feminina:
Nice!
Which makes you wonder if
- KK, who gives us the ether powers, was also a fan of ninja movies and kind of copied the gestures or
- the gestures are genuinely powerful and always have been, and those movies are way cooler than you knew
Totally another example of how the game draws on traditional Japanese culture as well as modern science-y sounding stuff. I like it.
Butch:
Yeah I gotta try more shrine stuff. I found the notes at the school (and any other place where they were kind enough to plop them in my path) but man, not in Tokyo. There is a map icon for them, but, as far as I can tell, it's only for ones you've already found, which is extremely unhelpful.
Yes, kk's lead is into the fog. Based on that little clip, we may be separated, and that's gonna suck because I hated that bit when we were separated.
Feminina:
We do need to try all the options at the shrine. I'm very curious about the less obvious ones like ninjas and world peace.
I think it's interesting that the phrase is "I wish for," like you're seeing a falling star or blowing out a candle. I would usually tend to think of prayer as more focused, and phrased more like "please allow me to find more Jizo statues" or whatever. But the game's approach is likely typical of Shinto practice (there are some nice pictures of torii gates in that article!), where my inclination is influenced by the heavily one-God-centered practice of the dominant Christian faith in this country.
Butch:
You guys try it and fill me in. I'm currently rather broke as I bought a bunch of matagama.
The cats giveth, and the cats taketh away.
Loothound:
Dude, spectral vision in real life would be awesome. Speaking of which, maybe you've figured out the trick of this Butch. So, spectral vision will sometimes make different noises based on what it picks up in its radar, right. This drives me nuts, because I hear one of the special noises and I'm all like "cool, there's something neat nearby." Except that I can never figure out what the noise means or where the special thing is. Then I walk around doing spectral Marco Polo—square, listen for noise, take a few steps, square, listen for noise, so on and so forth—and I still can't figure out what the game is trying to say! Then I say fuck it and start hopping buildings for spirits and money cats. Have you cracked this code, or is the game screwing with us?
Butch:
I have not cracked the code. You're right, sometimes it makes a little "ching" noise, but damned if I know what it is. Money, maybe?
But then, I'm dense. It was only yesterday that I figured out you'd hear a meow if you were near a collectible.
I don't want spectral vision in real life. If it really showed unpleasant things that could fuck your day up, then everything would glow all the damn time.
He said, going downstairs to make sure his snowblower works. Oh, look, it's glowing.
Loothound:
Hmm, good point, except the things can fuck up your day whether or not you see them coming—so I guess I'd rather know ahead of time. I like to have sufficient time to panic before the shit hits the fan…or me for that matter.
Just got called to a last minute meeting. Oh, look, it's glowing.
Feminina:
Hold on, I need to eat some chocolate. It's definitely not glowing.
I also feel there has to be some logic to the sounds associated with spectral vision, but I don't know which noise means 'yokai' and which means 'Jizo' and so forth. I do know the meow means something a cat wants, but honestly, that's about it.
Loothound:
On the topic of being dense (and cat toys), it took me forever to realize that you can activate the cat find items like quests. I'm watching Femmy play, and I notice all of these gold search area circles on her map being all like "how come I don't see any of those." When I realized what they were I felt like a complete dunce. I finally understood why they were always saying things like, "hey, wanna help me out?"
Feminina:
Oh yeah, that's key! Sorry, I would have mentioned it if I'd realized. I would totally only have about 5 cat toys right now if not for activating those as quests.
Instead, I've probably spent half my game time wandering around inside those yellow circles, saying "come on, I know it's here somewhere..."
Butch:
The circles made things a lot easier when I realized (last night...heh) that if you hover over them in the map they tell you what's in there. "Oh, I'm looking for a fan? Great." Then you look for a fan. Boom.
Feminina:
Yeah...that is handy...
I'm sorry I didn't share all my knowledge about cat toys, since everyone could have been enjoying those meowing noises with me all this time.
On the plus side, so much to enjoy now!
Loothound:
I haven't really cared about cat toys, so not a big deal. Still don't except for the outfits you can unlock for completing quests, which I will pay more attention to now that I've bought all of the clothes that money can buy (my current look, Butch, can best be described as 'dapper').
Feminina:
Correction: 'EXTREMELY dapper.'
