"Half-Past Two," by Marjorie Bowen
In the August 15th, 1928 Daily Mail (!!!); collected in Twilight Stories and elsewhere, apparently; read by Tol for PseudoPod 902, January 19th, 2024
2,833 words
Charming spooky story. The characters aren't especially sympathetic, but they don't have to be---I spent the whole time trying to guess what would happen next.
Listening to PseudoPod, I misunderstood the ending at first. Audio alone probably isn't the best way to experience this story, although the narrator Tol does a great job. You have to chew over the ending a bit and I do that best with my eyeballs, not my ears.
"[H]e was drawn to him by a stronger link than compassion, that of terror"---what a low-key smidgen of horror there.
