These two priests died because they offered strange fire before the Lord. What was the big deal? Was the Lord threatened by the fire when He himself presented himself as a pillar of fire before these people every night? No.
These priests each took his censer.
Could be due to a translation error so it might not have belonged to them personally, so it could have been a censer. Or it could be that each one had a censer assigned to him. Whatever the case, they were familiar with the censer. It was the very same incense recently prepared under the Lord's strict instructions they were going to use. The only thing missing which rendered their offering strange was that it was not powered by the Lord's instructions.
Leviticus 10:1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.
It probably seemed like a good idea, but it was not a God idea. Maybe the reason why some things we expect to work fail to do so is because they were not based on God's instructions but on our assumptions or presumptions. I don't know what those men were thinking, but it could be that they were thinking to impress people who were standing by, or they were trying to keep God happy and appeased through the high volume of offerings and activities like they see the priests of the gods of other nations around them do. But God could not be inundated or silenced with gifts, he would rather be obeyed. (1 Samuel 25:22) He wanted them to follow His instructions. He was not looking to be appeased, he wanted to be pleased. And the only thing that pleases Him is faith, which comes only when God has spoken.
See, faith is birthed only by Rhema. Once God speaks to us regarding a certain situation, faith is the natural product. So, if God's word is not involved, faith is not involved. And when faith is not involved, not only is failure to be expected, it is invited because whatsoever is not of faith is sin, not just in the sense of error but in the sense of falling short or missing the mark. This is why some good ideas we implement don't work out for us even though they seem to be working for other people – it was not a God idea.
Strange fires are dangerous and working with assumptions can be costly indeed.
