Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman announced a planned upgrade to Maryland's tax system that will disrupt some routine services provided by the Office of the Comptroller.
The upgrades will occur from January 31, 2024, to February 5, 2024. During this upgrade, the Office of the Comptroller will be unable to access individual taxpayer accounts, impacting their ability to provide certain services, including:
- Refund processing
- Payment plan setup
- Billing tasks
- Unclaimed property processing

Comptroller Lierman states this critical upgrade is necessary to launch Maryland Tax Connect, a new self-service portal that will revolutionize how Marylanders file their taxes. Once it launches on February 6, Maryland Tax Connect will offer business taxpayers:
- Increased ease and security for online tax filing
- Enhanced ability to interact with our agency
- Streamlined access to account information and services
According to the Office of the Comptroller:
We are committed to completing the upgrade as quickly as possible and resuming full service by February 6. In the meantime, we encourage your constituents to visit our website at www.marylandtaxes.gov for information and resources that could assist with their tax needs. We also encourage taxpayers to contact us after February 6 at 1-800-638-2937 or by email for assistance.
You may be asking Why Now?
There is no perfect time to implement a new tax processing system! Marylanders file taxes every month. Our subject matter and technical experts determined that early February would allow for the fewest disruptions because:
(1) it allows for business tax filers to complete their end of the year filings due in January,
(2) it is early enough in the tax season so as not to push anyone to file late and fewer people are filing, and
(3) to delay the implementation for another six months would have created additional reporting challenges and cost the state millions of dollars.
We are working to modernize as quickly as possible and there will always be challenges and hiccups along the way, but we are doing our best to ensure all Marylanders have access to secure, easy-to-use tax filing.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to improve our tax system to better serve the taxpayers of Maryland.
