Farewell on a Sunday

Saying goodbye to the family's, pet hamster, dealing with the losses, the grief, and, you will, eventually, recover, and keep this, beloved pet of yours, in your, mind…translated…

My daughter, with tears in her eyes, lined the inside of an elegant looking paper box up.  Her very first, hamster, just, left, us.

Mousey came to us for almost two years, we'd prepared for her arrival, by decorating a stay in my son's bedroom, normally, he'd lived on the army bases, and on the weekends and holiday, he may needed to, stay on site, so, the responsibility for taking care of this new addition to the family rested on his younger sister's, shoulders.

Mousey was originally named "Seaweed Roll", when she first arrived, "she was in a strange realm", stayed in her nest a long time.  Later, because of feeding, and cleaning, she'd gotten, acquainted with my daughter, and, as my daughter took her up in her hands, the four tiny legs started kicking like crazy, because she looked so very cute, my daughter changed her name to "Shorty" then.

Before my daughter graduated high school, she'd stayed with her mother at my mother-in-law's in Kaohsiung for a year, a little over a year ago, when she got into the university, that was when she'd returned back to Taipei to live.  Because of work, my wife stayed in Kaohsiung, and my son only returned home on his days off, and so, it's just, the two of us, father and daughter at home.  Although she is my child, we'd not lived together a long, long time, and, there were, a ton of things we needed to adjust to in each other's being there; thankful that Shorty was there, as a buffer between us.

When it was hot, my daughter would remind me to turn on the air-conditioning for Shorty; when it got cold, she'd told me to, put a blanket over his cage.  When my daughter was away, pops became, a surrogate to take care of the youngest of the family, her sister.  Sometimes, to get her feed at the pet shops on Keelung Road, the two of us would go to the nearby Lingjiang Night Market for supper.  My daughter is a night owl, with a completely different schedule to me, and, oftentimes, as I woke, I'd found that she wasn't, in her, bed, but in her older brother's room, I'd guessed, that she must've, stayed by Shorty's side until the depth of the nights, again.

Awhile ago, Shorty's energy level and appetite reduced even more, took her to the vet, the vet prescribed the meds, and loaned us a ventilator too.  In the midnight of Sunday, my daughter and her mother, took the time of Shorty's coming out for some water, gently, held her in their, hands, to feed her the medications, but, when we woke up in the morn again, Shorty had, left us, for good this time.  That weekend, my wife and son were at home, could it be, how thoughtful shorty had been, to allow all of us, to see her, off?

For the final time, my daughter picked up Shorty, placed her into the center of the tiny cardboard box, around her, my daughter put down her favorite foods, then, a few dried flowers onto her body, then, handed Shorty to the pet funeral homes.  That day, we'd, seen the youngest of the family off, our forever, family.

So this is, the thoughtfulness of this, tiny, hamster, to DIE when everybody in the family was there because she wanted to say goodbye to them, or that's, just human interpretations, but, no matter what, there's the love that went into loving this pet, and now she'd died, there will surely be the losses, the griefs to pass through, but eventually, the broken hearts will heal, and you will be ready again, for another lovely animal in your lives.  But, none will, EVER replace, this, very first LOVE of yours!
