Daily Bible Reading: Genesis 45-46, Matthew 14
Genesis 45:4-5 (ESV) So Joseph said to his brothers, "Come near to me, please." And they came near. And he said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.
Matthew 14:1-8 NKJV AT THAT time Herod the governor heard the reports about Jesus, and he said to his attendants, this is John the Baptist; He has been raised from the dead, and that is why the powers of performing miracles are at work in Him. For Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison [to stow him out of the way] on account and for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, For John had said to him, It is not lawful or right for you to have her. [Lev. 18:16; 20:21.] Although he wished to have him put to death, he was afraid of the people, for they regarded John as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst [before the company] and pleased and fascinated Herod, and so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. And she, being put forward and prompted by her mother, said, Give me the head of John the Baptist right here on a platter. [1]
The execution of John the Baptist (14:1–12) (Mark 6:14–29; Luke 3:19–20; 9:7–9)
14:1–12. As the news concerning Jesus and His mighty works spread, Herod heard about Jesus and His miraculous powers. This was Herod Antipas, who ruled over a fourth of Palestine (hence the title the tetrarch), including Galilee and Perea. He ruled from 4 b.c. to a.d. 39. His father Herod the Great had killed the Bethlehem babies (2:16). Herod Antipas judged Jesus when He was on trial (Luke 23:7–12). (See the chart on the Herods in Luke 1:5.)
Herod concluded that Jesus was John the Baptist … risen from the dead (cf. Luke 9:7). Matthew's last reference to John the Baptist was John's sending messengers to Jesus to inquire about Him (Matt. 11:2–14).[2]
