For the past few days, record breaking cold has blanketed majority of the country. In addition to the usual victims of flight cancellations, traffic delays, school and government closures, an added collateral damage is the impact on lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery.
The Li-ion battery has revolutionized every electronic devices, It's in our smartphone, laptop computer, remote key fob, ssand even in electric vehicle. It is indispensable in powering our connected world. However, the battery is sensitive to temperature changes. It does not handle cold weather well.
When exposed to sub-freezing temperatures, it loses charges, degrades in performance, and the electrolyte inside can freeze and cause damage to the battery itself. The problem is so severe that the EV maker Teslas provides special advisory to owners on battery preparation for charging during extreme cold.
So bundle up - not only to protect yourself during the arctic blast but also to preserve your Li-ion battery's health and longevity. Your life could depend on it.
