Recently I saw a post someone made that linked to the posts they'd written in 2023 which had received the most attention on their blog. I figured you guys already know which posts of mine you liked, so maybe I should figure out which posts stand out for me looking back over 2023–and why. I looked through my posts and chose six:
Number 6 The Perfect Couple?
https://aviperinourmidst.wordpress.com/2023/03/18/the-perfect-couple/
I worked very hard on this post. It took me several months of coming back to it and editing it a bit more each time before I felt comfortable putting it up for people to read. Analyzing the Mo and Linda's relationship was both painful and difficult, but in the end very worthwhile for me.
Number 5 What Boundaries Really Are
https://aviperinourmidst.wordpress.com/2023/09/10/what-boundaries-really-are/
This post didn't take me as long to write or edit as "The Perfect Couple?", but I still had to think deeply to reach my own understanding of boundaries. I was glad to be able to share, especially since the term "boundaries" is thrown around so much these days without defining what it actually means, so I suspect many people are in the same situation I was of not being sure what was being referred to.
Number 4 Medea: Villain or Scapegoat
https://aviperinourmidst.wordpress.com/2023/07/16/medea/
I did quite a bit of research for this post. It's been years since I've been able to do a research project and I'd missed the joy I take in pursuing information. There were also some insightful comments about the post that brought up more elements of the Medea story that I'd overlooked. Medea's story is so old and yet the trope of the "crazy sorceress" is still used by society today to scare women into conforming. Abuse is an old problem handed down from ancient times and made new for every generation.
Number 3 When Mistakes are Valuable and Valued
https://aviperinourmidst.wordpress.com/2023/04/09/when-mistakes-are-valuable/
Life is hard. There are some moments that make all the work that we are doing and have done worth it. This post is about that. Reading this post again made me tear up–in a good way 🙂
Number 2 What We Don't Know
https://aviperinourmidst.wordpress.com/2023/08/27/what-we-dont-know/
I felt very brave posting this. It's an opinion. It's my opinion and I was able to share it: a huge milestone after years of hiding myself and my thoughts from others to avoid being punished for being me.
Number 1 A Profoundly Sick Society
(https://aviperinourmidst.wordpress.com/2023/10/01/sick/)
This was also a hard post to write, and one that I put off publishing for maybe 6 months, mostly because there was too much to say and in the end, I didn't say it very well or at all completely. It comes down to a very incomplete fragment of something that needs very badly to be said, to be laid out completely and written competently, but would probably take 100s of pages to do. Its imperfection, after all my work to make it better, is perhaps why it continues to haunt me.
I want to thank you for reading: you are wonderful and I feel honored to be able to read many of your blogs, and to share this blog space with you. This year would have been so much more bleak and isolated without you.
