"The Oval Portrait," by Edgar Allan Poe
Published in a slightly longer form in Graham's Magazine in 1842 under the title "Life in Death" (perhaps too on the nose?), and then in its shorter, retitled version in Broadway Journal, April 26th, 1845---both publications were quite short-lived; read well by Wayne Johnson for PseudoPod 844, December 23rd, 2022; also available in HTML, PDF, and Google Docs below some commentary here; also here and here and on LibriVox and in two different later versions on Wikisource
1,290 words in the later version
Poe's sublimely morbid imagination is always a delight. The playful tension between art and life reminds me of Oscar Wilde. (According to Wikipedia, this story did somewhat inspire Dorian Gray!)
I'm not sure why the frame story is necessary, but it's certainly very atmospheric.
