Five months since Ukraine initiated its counter-offense, the situation on the ground can be summarized in one word - stalemate. And with the size advantage of Russia, its president, Vladimir Putin, has the upper hand in manpower and resources to grind down its former Soviet republic member.
Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine's military chief, admitted as much in his interviews. He describes Russia as "a feudal state where the cheapest resource is human life. And for us [Ukraine] . . .the most expensive thing we have is our people. . . Sooner or later we are going to find that we simply don't have enough people to fight."
Without a doubt, duration of this war matters. Except with the oncoming of winter, little can be done on either side. One fact is certain. Continuing supports from the West is key to Ukraine victory. Without it, Russia will win this war of attrition.
Unfortunately, the Middle East conflict between the Hamas and Israel is diverting attention and resources away from Ukraine. According to a recent Gallop poll, more Americans (41%) believe the US is doing too much to help Ukraine, up from 29% just five months ago.
The question is: do we really want Putin to win?
