Periwinkle, scientifically known as Vinca, is a charming and versatile flowering plant that has captivated gardeners and herbalists alike for centuries. With its delicate blooms and an array of hues ranging from white and pink to lavender and blue, periwinkle adds a touch of elegance to gardens and landscapes worldwide.
Distinguished by glossy, elliptical leaves and clusters of pinwheel-shaped, five-petaled flowers, these resilient evergreens flourish in diverse soil conditions and various levels of shade. Periwinkle's knack for spreading makes it a prized choice for creating lush ground covers, and once established, it demands minimal upkeep.
Periwinkle boasts a diverse heritage in traditional medicine, valued for its medicinal attributes. The plant contains alkaloids, such as vincamine and vinblastine, which are known for vasodilator and anti cancer properties respectively.
Periwinkle's ground-covering nature makes it an ideal companion plant, preventing weed growth and creating a lush carpet of greenery. It pairs well with other shade-loving plants like ferns.
It is cultivated in rural areas of India to prevent soil erosion. As this plant blooms throughout the year, it is known as Sadabahar or Sadasuhagan (perennial or evergreen) plant in India.
Overall, periwinkle is a versatile and visually appealing plant with both ornamental and practical applications.
Ever wondered why I've taken up gardening and delving into the details of a particular flower? Well, there's a reason behind it. Amidst various plants and flowers boasting different qualities beyond aesthetics and fragrance, periwinkle has sparked some inspiration in me.
I have noticed that more people opt for walks in summer, fewer in the rain, and even less in the cold. Winter suggests hearty, nutritious meals for added energy, yet there's often minimal effort to digest such rich foods.
Our mood swings depending on individuals, timing, and seasons. Our conduct undergoes continuous changes, while our basic activities like eating, drinking, breathing, and sleeping persist as vital for survival.
Now mobile has also become essential, but why not other things that periwinkle asks us to do? Why should not we emulate its properties by:
1. Striving and thriving to adapt ourselves to different situations.
2. Not seeking excessive attention, as our actions speak louder than words.
3. Proving our competence and utility for society and the country.
4. Extending a helping hand to others in times of need.
5. Leading a life that spreads joy consistently throughout the year.
Here I conclude-
Beneath the moon's soft, silken sprinkle,
Come all and twinkle with the periwinkle...
In the nature's warm hug, a life is so fine,
With stars and flowers, weave a celestial design...
