Every year as the temperature begins to slip below freezing, I wish that people could hibernate for the winter just like bears. Sleeping straight through winter wouldn't need to be a requirement, but how wonderful would it be to simply be able to stay home all day, every day, only venturing out when convenient? I would love nothing more than to pass on shoveling driveways and scraping windshields. The shorter daylight hours are depressing, as is the pretty much constant state of dismal grey in the skies over our little valley. The plowing of roads seems to get worse every winter, and there are too many distracted, careless and selfish drivers during summer weather let alone when roads are icy. I just want to be at home, reading a book or watching a movie while snuggled beneath a comfy blanket and sipping on warm beverage, and making soup or stew for dinner. But even a homebody such as I would get restless and bored soon enough.
While yesterday was grey and rainy, today is blue skies and sunshine. There looks to be a decent breeze, and I am often seeing leaves fluttering past the dining room window. The maple tree in the backyard tends to hold onto its' leaves for a long time and this fall is no different with a healthy amount of leaves still covering the branches. Hopefully snow will hold off until the leaves have finished falling and can be raked up, unlike last year with a very early deep freeze that left many trees holding onto their leaves through most of the winter.
I have been struggling with productivity of late, and I am not sure why. It could be how quickly daylight hours shrunk and the changing of the seasons. Stuff is still getting done but at a slower pace, at least at home. It isn't concerning, and it will pass. This is merely an observation and a reminder to myself that this isn't laziness as I am prone to believing. Most of my work week is very busy, very active and social, and I need some time to be less busy, to be still and quiet, to savour some solitude and recharge my batteries. All of the necessary things on my weekend to-do list will get done.
