As I was driving the other day it amazed me yet again how much of the world is hidden during the months of the year when there are leaves on the trees. I love leaves on the trees, the green is inspiring and healthy and the leaves are important to all the critters that need them to thrive, but they hide a lot from our sight. I would never take away the leaves just so I could see what's out there, but it's a humbling reminder of how much is hidden beneath the surface of something that we see every day. Yes, it's something we see each fall and winter in many parts of the country, but it's still something that never ceases to surprise me.
I think it's an especially relevant lesson during this time of year when we've got so much going on that as much as we should dive into everything we can, especially everything that brings us joy and is only available during this time of year, there's also something incredibly valuable about slowing down enough to dive a little deeper into some things and getting a fuller picture, the full story, or just a more immersive experience of it.
There's so much in this world that we'll never see, so many people that we'll never meet, so much that we'll never do. And that's OK. But maybe this holiday season you're going to try something new just because you too have been reminded about how much more there is to the world. It's not a competition or effort to overschedule your life during the next month, but about letting some traditions rest for a year and trying something else instead or revisiting something from the past. Yes, the surface is beautiful, but sometimes it pays to take a little deeper look.
