A new scholarship program will cover the cost of tuition and fees at Prince George's Community College for county residents.
Prince George's County residents can now access a new scholarship program to cover the cost of tuition and fees at Prince George's Community College (PGCC) for all academic programs as well as workforce development and skills training. The $2 million scholarship program is available only to county residents who live within six miles of MGM National Harbor and is funded with some of the gambling revenue the casino provides to the County.
Scholarships will cover tuition and fees left over after other scholarships and grants are redeemed by students. "Prince George's residents who attend the community college typically spend about $3,900 a year in tuition and fees," according to The Washington Post.
Eligibility requirements for the scholarship are simple to encourage maximum participation:
- There are no age, income or grade-point-average criteria.
- The money must be used to attend Prince George's Community College.
- Scholarship funds are applicable to vocational, certificate, or degree programs.
According to reporting, 112 people have already applied for the scholarship, and PGCC estimates that 712 of its current students are eligible for funding. With the $2 million program, there is enough money to aid more than 1,000 county residents. Funding will be available starting in the Spring semester.
The scholarship program was spearheaded by County Council Member Edward Boroughs III.
