Finding Hope is the first in a heartwarming new middle grade series. With friendly characters who will soon become very familiar as well as all the four-legged friends you would find on a working farm, it's perfect for animal lovers. It will also really benefit children who live in cities and have no experience of farm life. Inspired by the real life experiences of the author, the story has an authentic feel describing the ups and downs of caring for animals.
Ten-year-old Ava goes to stay at Whistledown Farm while her parents are working abroad. It's very different from her life in the city - full of mud, wellies and animals. Everyone's telling her to make the most of it but Ava feels out of place. She just doesn't fit in.
Her aunt and uncle do all they can to make her feel welcome but she keeps making mistakes - which her cousin won't let her forget. It's not until she rescues a newborn lamb that Ava feels like she has a purpose. Having responsibility for another living thing brings out a new side of Ava. Perhaps she will finally find something she's good at and a place where she will feel at home.
Rachael Dean's illustrations are charming, depicting life on the farm as well as Ava's emotional journey. Readers will feel like Ava is a friend, hoping she will feel happy and settled.
This series will be perfect for fans on Jacqueline Wilson's realistic fiction and animal stories such as The Snow Foal by Susanne Bailey or Meg and Merlin by Tanya Landman.
Growing up, Nicola Baker spent hours filling notebooks with stories and sketches. After a successful career as a physiotherapist and raising two children, she's now come full circle and is writing again. Nicola lives on a small-holding with her husband Matt Baker and their family, who starred together in Our Farm in the Dales.
