One of the biggest reasons why I advocate for doing the easy things on our to-do lists and celebrating the small victories and goals is because those little successes can be big moments of encouragement and big confidence boosters for us. On days when everything seems to go wrong or life just seems stalled (or worse: going backwards), being able to say that you accomplished at least a few good things, however small, is the necessary reminder that there's no reason to waste a day, nor does a difficult day mean that you can't accomplish anything.
Yes, sometimes life demands big efforts and we have to put in some serious hours, but that's not regular life or regular success for most of us. Most of us just don't have a life where we're all building boats each day to survive an incoming flood. Of course this is a good thing, but it's also challenging in a way because sometimes it's nice to be able to give big efforts to things and we want to really make progress, but we just can't because we've got all these responsibilities in our lives.
So make a choice each and every day to do something that feels good in your day. Maybe what makes you happy is to learn something new each day and you've got an app or joined an email list or social media group that feeds that with a little insight each day. Maybe it's the choice each week that you're going to get one thing at the food store that makes you happy, that isn't necessarily on your list or on your diet. Maybe it's doing 5 minutes of yoga or meditation or walking every day regardless of how busy your day is. Maybe it's donating $5 each week to go-fund-me campaigns. Maybe it's making the effort to tidy the house for 5 minutes each day that brings you peace. Maybe it's taking 30 minutes each week to volunteer at the animal shelter.
No matter how challenging life gets, how long the road is to success, or how unproductive you feel, it's worth it to prioritize having at least one small win, treat, success, or thing that makes you smile in each day. What small wins are you committed to each day?
