In Kubrick's The Shining have been found Jack Nicholson eyes wide open staring at the lens of camera. The unearther suggests it might be Nicholson has seen a ghost. I consider it more akin to be possessed by ghost or emotions pacified by civilization (passive agent) and civilized manner couching (active agents).

I

We have a strong rationalizing capacity; momentary aberration in our subjective timespace continuum we can easily explain away to ourselves. The jargon of the previous sentence means that were we to find ourselves doing something (or standing motionless) that we cannot readily explain its origin, we assume nonetheless that that's we wanted all along.

This absence of mind can create serious consequences for a legal system that moves on the wheels of mens rea. You see, if a murder is committed in such a state of mind, the mind will assume guilt for the act, even though the murderer cannot be consciously aware why on earth he or she did it. Both the accuser and the accused would be eating the fruit without counting the trees.

Whether murderer knows or not those fond of CG Jung will look merely at the result to tell us, away with the murderer. Yet by not deigning to explain, the accuser has merely put self on the same ignorant plain as the murderer. Law, thankfully, also attempts to find motive for an action yet lethargy in investigation / courtroom might incline the justice system to peruse Jung unnecessarily.

II

As humanity becomes more civilized, it becomes less violent in its totality. However, despite that pacifying force at work, individuals remain prone to anger. A momentary show of anger in a group setting can cause authorities to arrange mandatory sessions for the angry person. From such efforts at pacifying, others learn that anger is a bad thing, in itself. Such souls, then, deliberately or unconsciously suppress their legitimate anger as well.

Perhaps, prior to events portrayed in The Shining, the character played by Nicholson had undergone anger management – even some Clockwork Orange regimen. Once tethers of society loosened in the lonely hotel, where Nicholson was living with just two people that looked towards him for support, he begin to get addicted to violence.

When Jack Nicholson had to break the door with axe – even for legitimate purpose – he had to call upon suppressed violent tendencies, in proportion to the extent holding back was imposed on him – or, to the depths of his conscious they had been buried by a society playing God. Once unleashed, however, these tendencies are hard to pacify without outside help.

It is, therefore, necessary that intervention occurs in rare cases, rather than making humans reliant upon constant help.
