"With novels, I write every day, just because that's the only way you can get it done. With a short story, I write when I feel inspired. It's a tendency that I used to have with all of my writing, as a younger writer, but I can't indulge that with novels or I'll never get them done. I think Octavia Butler said something to the effect of, Don't rely on inspiration. You have to rely on habit. Habit is more useful when you're actually trying to get work done on deadline."
