The other day in a blog post on my other blog I shared some song lyrics that some consider an "earworm" from a Taylor Swift song. "Earworms" are a line or few lines of a song that keep going in circles through your mind, I won't list any so you don't have them in your head, but if you think about it there are some in commercials and kids songs that should instantly come to mind that fit the bill. As the song lyrics that inspired my blog post continued to run through my head I got to thinking about it from a business perspective. Some people say all publicity is good publicity, but I think we're really far beyond that in the world that we live in right now. People get so worked up and so polarized on topics these days and it's hard to sway them once they've made up their minds and picked a side, plus it's really hard to get past big debacles because they're plastered all over the news and the internet for everyone to see.
Sure it's great to work on going viral and having something awesome or special or touching that you're involved in seen around the world, or writing a song that creates "earworms" that people want to listen to and sing over and over, or creating a commercial that ends up in the favorite/iconic lists each year for holidays or special (sporting) events. If you want to be successful in business you obviously have to make sales, and the main way to make sales is to get more people to know about your business and offerings, and you only do that by spreading the word.
So what it comes down to for me is a question of being of service, because in my mind that's really what we're here to do as business owners. To be honest I like that we're being kept a little more accountable about what we put out into the world and I hope that we do think twice before hoping for any publicity rather than thinking about what could potentially go wrong with the choices we're making and the negative impact it could have on our future successes. It's not about making sure that everyone will love what we do, because that's not possible as some people will dislike or outright hate us, but rather making sure that to our best efforts we're not on the 'world's biggest flop/failure' lists. I want to be proud of not only the business I'm running, but also the marketing I put out into the world, and publicity I receive. As we head into the last 4 months of 2023 and this year's biggest holidays, I encourage you to keep this in the back of your head and may it be not just a year of record sales, but also the year you're most proud of the work you put out into the world.
