Celebrating Good Times

Years ago, I quit my job in New York City and was in the process of moving out of my apartment for a new adventure in Boston when I decided to drop everything and fly out to Los Angeles for my dear friend Steph's wedding. I had no budget for this, so fortunately I found a cheap flight and free accommodation with a cousin for a few days--except for the wedding night, which I spent on the floor of a friend's hotel room!

I remember talking with Steph's dad at the wedding. He was thanking me for being there, especially at a time of upheaval for me. He said many people would've used moving as an excuse to pass up a life-changing moment for a friend, and his words have stuck with me over the years. The memory of that time spent in LA, both at the wedding and with my cousins, is priceless. I am so glad I made the effort to be there.

Fast forward to this week when my long-time close friend and writing partner Julia called me with the great and unexpected news that she became engaged!

Congratulations to Julia & Mark! We are so excited to share in your joy!

There's nothing more uplifting than a midweek FaceTime call from a dear friend sharing great news to make you feel elated, no matter what else is happening at that moment in your own life. Feeling joy in the happiness Julia and Mark have found in each other, I was reminded of our recent post exploring behavior researcher Brene Brown's use of the terms "freudenfreude" and "shoy."

The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard but must be felt with the heart.

This weekend feels like a perfect time to be basking in the glow of good news. Labor Day weekend is here, intended as the official national celebration of the achievements of U.S. workers and their innumerable ongoing contributions to our strength as a country. Unofficially, the Labor Day holiday marks the end of the summer season, but make the best of these last moments! However you decide to celebrate this weekend--swimming at the beach, BBQing in your backyard, or supporting workers by picketing with SAG-AFTRA--we wish you a joyful and meaningful weekend with friends.
