"A Strange and Sometimes Sadness," by Kazuo Ishiguro
Not sure where this story appeared, maybe in the late 1970s or early '80s; there is a rather halting but clear reading on YouTube
Several thousand words?
When I found this early story of Ishiguro's of course I had to listen to it. It has certain qualities of his later work, the same preoccupation with memory and regret, the same fine and simple prose and dialogue. Not as gripping in my opinion, but I enjoyed it a lot. The feminine voice works for me—I feel like Ishiguro has never had trouble making his female characters believable.
