L'inflation a bon dos. Les prix du SaaS s'envolent. Pour le cabinet Vertice, les éditeurs ont parfois recours à des approches peu transparentes pour gonfler le pricing.
Les prix du SaaS ont connu une inflation moyenne de 12 % durant les 12 derniers mois. Pour produire cette estimation, le cabinet Vertice se base sur les tarifs de 16 000 éditeurs et compare les niveaux d'août 2022 et août 2023. 73 % des éditeurs passés au crible ont augmenté leurs tarifs sur la période. Microsoft a ainsi relevé ses prix de 15 %.
« Sachant qu'une entreprise utilise aujourd'hui en moyenne jusqu'à 130 outils, il est difficile d'ignorer l'impact que ce phénomène aura sur vos budgets SaaS », écrit Vertice, qui pointe clairement la volonté des éditeurs de maximiser leurs marges.
« Cette poussée des prix est très importante par rapport à ce que nous constations les années précédentes, explique Joël Windels, VP Global Marketing, Vertice, à nos confrères de CFO Dive. À titre de comparaison, les tarifs du SaaS avaient augmenté en moyenne de 6 % en 2019. « Les éditeurs SaaS se sont traditionnellement appuyés sur une croissance des usages pour stimuler la valeur globale des contrats, mais au cours des 12 derniers mois, nous avons vu les hausses de prix devenir l'un des principaux leviers utilisés par les fournisseurs pour stimuler leurs résultats. »
Tactiques peu transparentes
En 2023, deux des principaux éditeurs mondiaux, Microsoft et Salesforce, ont ainsi annoncé des hausses de tarifs. Pour le premier, ce bond atteignait 9 à 15%, touchant de plein fouet les entreprises européennes. L'éditeur de Redmond s'est justifié en expliquant vouloir refléter les taux de change avec le dollar. De son côté, Salesforce a annoncé le mois dernier son intention de relever ses tarifs de 9 % en moyenne sur plusieurs de ses offres, dont Sales Cloud et Marketing Cloud, arguant que sa liste de prix n'avait pas bougé depuis sept ans.
Pour Vertice, d'autres éditeurs ont recours à des approches bien moins transparentes. « Nous avons constaté que certains fournisseurs augmentent leurs coûts de manière plus subtile, en utilisant des tactiques telles que le regroupement ou le dégroupage de fonctions et le passage à des modèles de pricing basés sur l'utilisation mensuelle », écrivent les analystes britanniques. D'ailleurs ces derniers établissent une corrélation entre l'absence de clarté des modèles de pricing pratiqués par les éditeurs et le risque de voir les factures augmenter...
Un doublement en l'espace que de cinq ans
Si l'augmentation moyenne des dépenses en logiciels augmentait en même temps que l'inflation économique, il faudrait 18 ans pour que le coût des logiciels double. Malheureusement, dans le monde actuel des renouvellements automatiques, il n'a fallu que cinq ans pour que les dépenses en logiciels doublent. Cela signifie que si vous dépensiez 100 EUR par mois sur Microsoft en 2017, d'ici 2023, cela grimperait à près de 200 EUR par mois. En comparaison, si le coût des logiciels avait augmenté parallèlement à l'inflation aux États-Unis, il ne serait que de 120 EUR par mois.
On peut s'attendre à ce que l'explosion des dépenses en logiciels soit provoquée par l'adoption de nouveaux outils ou par le besoin de licences et de fonctionnalités supplémentaires, mais la plupart du temps, les fournisseurs facturent simplement davantage aux clients. Et trop souvent, cela passe par des tactiques trompeuses de renouvellement automatique. Lorsqu'il s'agit d'augmenter les coûts des logiciels, trop de fournisseurs laissent les termes juridiques faire le travail. Une analyse de 10 000 contrats de logiciels au cours des cinq dernières années, l'indice d'inflation SaaS mentionné ci-dessus, a révélé que 88 % des fournisseurs ont des clauses qui leur permettent de modifier leurs prix à tout moment. Dans certains cas, ils n'ont même pas besoin d'informer les clients.
Les éditeurs de logiciels sont plus efficaces pour fidéliser leurs clients lorsqu'il existe des contrats à plus long terme. C'est pourquoi les remises sont plus susceptibles de se produire pour les contrats signés sur deux, trois ou quatre ans. Lorsqu'une organisation sait qu'elle va s'appuyer sur un outil pendant une période prolongée, il est dans son intérêt de négocier des accords à plus long terme et de bien comprendre les conditions de renouvellement.
