If you're anything like me, you've probably fallen off the "get healthy" wagon as many times as you've climbed back on it. I feel like I've been on this journey to live healthier for almost 3 decades. Very often it has been inspired by awful physical symptoms and the never-ending attempts to feel better.
It started with learning about the benefits of healthier eating, incorporating more whole foods, cleaner eating, and aspiring to a nutrient-dense diet. But over the years I have been inspired to go a little deeper and slowly rid our home of not only foods that are processed and loaded with toxins (like sugars, seed oils, natural flavors, and chemicals- they are truly in just about everything we buy)but to slowly transition into a low-tox home as well.
Notice I said LOW-TOX, not NO-TOX because honestly, I'm just not there yet. And you know what? That's okay
I'm way further along than I've ever been before and that feels great! Instead of getting defeated by the few things I'm still figuring out, I've adopted the mantra, "I love learning new ways to create a healthier home for my family." Or "I love implementing new ways to nurture and care for my body."
Fragrance has been something I have LOVED since I was a little girl. The scent of my mother's perfume or certain smells from growing up in an Italian kitchen can evoke the most vivid memories! I've always loved perfume and I think every woman longs to have her very own signature scent. In fact, the perfume I used to wear when my husband and I first started dating will make him immediately think of me when he confronts it out in the working world.
Giving up the cozy comfort of candles and pretty perfumes doesn't mean we need to go without a clean-smelling, cozy house, or body for that matter
When I first worked to switch out toxic candles for essential oils, I started by thinking of the wonderful smells of baked goods and coastal woodland scents that I so enjoyed in my beloved candles. I've always been more attracted to woodsy, mossy, masculine scents in perfumes and candles, so I collected lots of woodland, earthy essential oils so I can still enjoy that ambiance in my home every day. And in the fall and Christmastime, I enjoyed the warmer sweeter fragrances of something pumpkin spice or cinnamon apple baked goods, so my go-to is usually a combo of orange, lemon, cinnamon, and cloves in my diffuser.
And it's been so easy to swap the toxic aerosol bathroom sprays and create my own. I enjoy fresh, citrusy scents in there, so I experiment with lemon, lime, grapefruit, and different mints. Purchase dark glass spray bottles with labels so your oils stay fresh and guests know what it's for, and after combining half purified water and half witch hazel, have fun mixing in a few drops of each of your favorite oils and there's one more aspect of your life becoming less toxic. Healthier, toxin-free skin care, shampoo, and perfumes will need a post all their own. But it feels good to keep moving forward on this journey to healthier living. Hope this inspires you! ~Be Blessed, Jenny
