A Facebook post claiming that Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) inmates give medication to other prisoners has been met with denial.
In a Facebook video, an off-camera inmate shouts in Kweyol to another prisoner descending a stairway.
The inmate declares that the prisoner descending the stairway is not a nurse and should not give medication to others.
"That is what dem people does do. You not a (expletive) nurse. They giving prisoners medication to come and give inmate," the off-camera voice declares.
He called out a female Correctional Officer by name, asserting that she had handed the prisoner the medication to give to another and vowed to publicise the issue on Facebook.
Attempts to obtain an official BCF response were unsuccessful.
However, a well-informed source familiar with the BCF's operations denied the Facebook claims, declaring that medical officials provide medicines at the prison.
However, the source said nurses sometimes leave the medication, and correctional officers get it to the designated inmate.
The source also denied that inmates distribute medication.
According to the source, some three registered nurses and a nursing assistant serve the BCF.
Nevertheless, the source explained that although the institution expects a medical doctor to come on board, the BCF needs additional medical staff to address the needs of its 565 inmates.
