Day Nine - Honor Parents
"Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you." Deuteronomy 5:16 (NIV). God commands us to honor our parents for three reasons: He commands it, we will love long, and it will go well with us.
He also mentions in Ephesians: "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Ephesians 6:2-3 (NIV). There are not many commands that comes with a promise. Colossians also adds: "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord." Colossians 3:20 (NIV). Pleasing the Lord should always be our focus.
So why don't we honor our parents? They are the people God gave us to raise up in the ways we should go. Yes, they get on our nerves when they lecture and disciple us, but God our heavenly Father does the same because of His love for us. How well has it gone for us because we have honored our parents despite their faults?
