This Christian novel has three narrators, all women, all from the same family. Mary Balsam, a wife and mother, runs a farm and takes in escaped slaves during the Civil War, while her husband is fighting with the Union Army. Her descendent, Nora Balsam, lives through the race riots in Detroit in the 1960's and retreats, with her African American husband, to a family house in the country. Elderly and alone, she is joined many years later by great-niece, Elizabeth, a struggling journalist, who is hoping to discover her next big story somewhere in the family history.
Reading about their lives will take you on a journey through the history of race relations in the United States. There are family secrets, a mystery to solve, and a bit of romance. Well-written, and with engaging characters, this light read will hold your attention until the very end.
VERDICT: 4 STARS.
