When I first started my job at the age of 19, the place of posting was around 200 kms and the only convenient mode of travel was by train. It took about six hours to reach there. In such a situation, daily commuting was not possible.
I took a room on rent there, but every weekend I used to come back to Varanasi. One Friday I was down with fever, and travelling in such a condition was unfit, but I boarded my usual train.
As soon as I set foot in Varanasi Cantt. station, I started feeling a little better. And when I got home, I was absolutely fine, not a sign of fever or discomfort. It was like a miracle. My friends and relatives called it "homesickness". And I accepted their point with all humility.
But one Monday I was on leave, and went to BHU to collect my certificate etc, but once in BHU, it's difficult not to meet old colleagues, professors, librarians etc, apart from visiting my frequently visited places like Vishwanath temple, Manas Mandir, Sankatmochan, Lanka etc.
When I came back home, I was running a fever, a little unwell, probably due to exhaustion. My mom was waiting for me at the gate, and as usual I put my head on her lap. She placed her hand on my head and started stroking my head lightly and running her thin fingers through my hair.
After some time I fell asleep. When I woke up, she had brought her special ginger tea. After drinking it, I was all right, there was no trace of fatigue. Then I realized that it was not homesickness or anything else, but lap therapy, mom's lap therapy.
Then I noticed that the first thing I used to do after returning home from anywhere was to hug my mom and put my head on her lap. So instead of going to doctors or hospitals, I preferred the natural shade of my mom's stole.
I never felt a headache for a long time in my life because I had the luxury of lap therapy.
Those who can, must try to avail themselves of this therapy. I am sure it will have a miraculous effect.
