"Dhum dhum thak…dhum dhum thak!!, the sound of drums all around, the crowd holding on to their seats, the batsman taps the bat, tightens her grip, the bowler takes a step and throws his spell of underbowl and … the arena locked in, a sudden silence, eyes turning with the ball in the air and … This movie is a Smasher! Win or lose, it's a big hit with the crowd, it'll win you over and leave you chanting for more!
I apologise if that hypes up the movie and ruins your experience.
If you enjoy simple movies with no overload of drama, but just pure innocence and natural mundane life, then do watch this.
For me, it was like a time travel capsule. It ignited a rush of memories and emotions from my childhood, school-life, and even the Covid-19 year, when the underarm cricket with my friends was the best part of my day (it used to seem futile and silly, that grown ass 23 year olds playing underarm, but it was worth it! )
The feeling of joy from making an impossible comeback to taking a huge wicket can't be put into words. Winning or losing without any consequence or purpose in hindsight seems like a waste of time except for making memories. But, at that moment, during the match it used to get intense, and it was just natural.
But, not just the game part.
There were many subtle moments related to sibling chemistry, living in a middle-class household, the society culture and some more.
Some mentionable scenes which were only for a few minutes but was very relatable and added a sweet touch to the film.
Like, there's one instance when Aditi (radhika madan) is going to sleep in her parents room and she sleeps on a pull out bed. That moment is so short yet filled with so much nostalgia that just one single shot will make you reminisce about your childhood.
On one instance, Kabir(Ayush mehra) is seen practising late at night post their first match, then Zakir (Faiz khan) comes up to him to comfort him, and when he's going back Kabir hugs him from behind.
It's a very simple moment. When you see the movie and have some context you'll realise the beauty of this simple instance.
"When you aren't sure of what to do in life, it's easier to follow someone else's advice instead of learning about your own self." Another quote from the movie, on some level it's very relatable.
The cast was phenomenal. They filled the screen with warmth, authenticity, simplicity and even thirst traps *wink wink* in some moments.
The entire cast's acting was very natural and connecting.
Hope to see Ayush Mehra in a lot more roles. His cricket strokes were Bang on like a professional. He stepped up his game. He finally seemed in his element without any touch of forced acting.
Radhika played her role with finesse, it didn't come off as cringy and forced. Especially in her interactions with her brother, her eyes had the right touch of authenticity. Even her bowling style of holding one hand close to her ear along with her facial expressions lent depth to her role.
Rajat Barmecha nailed the perfect balance of a condescending yet caring elder sibling. Hope to see him in more natural roles.
Overall this is a gem of a movie for me.
You might like it. You might feel I overhyped it and over-romanticised it.
Well, maybe.
You can only know by watching it.
So go! Do watch it.
It's available to stream for free on Jiocinema.
If you like it, leave a comment.
If not, well, this is just one person's opinion.
Hopefully I match your choice on the next recommendation.
A few worth mentioning dialogues -
"A game is not just about winning, it's a lot more than that."
—--
"Maine kabhi aisa kuch Kiya nahi hai",
"Jo kabhi ni kiya, usse karne ke liye thik woh hi karna padta Jo kabhi nahi kiya"
[ I have never done anything like this before,
To do what you have never done before, you have to do, what you've never done before.]
I'd also like to make a special mention of the brilliance of the casting director - Kavish Sinha. I got to read about him because of this film and it seems he had a really good eye and is responsible for many successful casting, based on IMDB's bio.
