Throughout college, you get asked at least once, "What do you want to do after college?". I am always puzzled by the question because by pursuing a degree in Communication Studies, with a minor in Advertising and Public Relations, there are a wide range of careers I can pursue. I am someone who wants to constantly learn through working, stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things. With that said, it has been a challenge to narrow down a specific career. However, since starting my internship at 84.51°, I have discovered a whole new career interest that I have highly enjoyed and feel secure in.
84.51° is a retail data science, insights and media company subsidiary of The Kroger Co. We help consumer packaged goods, agencies and affiliated partners create and drive valuable shopping experiences through their online and in-store journeys. I am under the Strategy and Acceleration team. Specifically, my role is in Commercial Insights and Loyalty Marketing. There is a variety of responsibilities and tasks that fall into this role, which means each day can look different. Some responsibilities include communicating with our PR agency, keeping track of the team's PR results, and assisting in project managing important work that the company releases. A key component in my role is working with the commercial insights team to market the company's data solutions to support our business and assist in growing brands and stores to adjust and grow with the changes in consumer behaviors.
With full transparency, I was intimidated to start this position because I was not pursuing a degree in marketing, or business analytics. Yet, with my drive to constantly learn and push myself, and the great foundation from my education at Ohio University, I found that I was capable. I can share my insights, creativity and opinions with my team, and not feel as if what I share is tossed aside. Everyone is beyond supportive and driven, which has helped me succeed in my responsibilities. The company respects, values and praises its employees which is beyond empowering. Outside of work, there are many opportunities for bonding and collaboration, as well as times designated for health and wellness events. It is a progressive and collaborative work environment where I have been exposed to the unique world of consumer research and data science. It is a new field of marketing and PR that I am grateful to be exposed to.
