"Bob [Gottlieb] and I used to joke about our egos being so huge that they didn't exist—which is a way of saying that neither he nor I felt we were in competition with anybody. That's not a very nice thing to say about myself or him; but at the same time, it's important to remember that a large ego can be generous and enabling, because of its lack of envy. There was a way in which our confidence was wide-spirited."
