The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has emphasised the importance of thoroughly investigating the Mahdia Secondary School dormitory fire in Guyana that killed 19 children.

And while extending its sympathies to the victims' families and wishes for the recovery of the survivors, the Commission noted the need to hold those responsible for the tragedy accountable.

In addition, the IACHR said in a press release that it is crucial to establish mechanisms for reparation to ensure justice for the victims.

"The IACHR is fully committed to providing any necessary assistance to the State according to Inter-American human rights standards on the rights of children, in particular regarding the necessary supervision of institutions housing children," the Commission stated.

"Adequate training for staff members in risk prevention and emergency response must be also a priority within these facilities," the organisation observed.

Last week Guyana President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali signalled the government's intention to establish a Commission of Inquiry (COI) to investigate the tragic fire 'at the soonest'.

"The government which I lead has committed to doing everything that is possible to assist those affected. This support will be ongoing,"Ali told a prayer and reflection ceremony on the eve of Guyana's 57th Independence observance.

Officials have said that the deadly Mahdia Secondary School dormitory fire was 'maliciously set' by a teenage student upset because school authorities confiscated her mobile telephone.
