The death toll in the May 21 Mahdia Secondary School dormitory fire in Guyana rose to 20 on Tuesday after another student succumbed.
Local reports identified the deceased as fourteen-year-old Sherana Daniels.
The state-owned Guyana Chronicle said she died Tuesday morning while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
According to the publication, the Daniels succumbed to the effects of carbon monoxide inhalation, despite valiant efforts to save her.
Before the teenager's death, Guyana police charged a 15-year-old girl with nineteen counts of murder concerning the Mahdia Secondary School dormitory fire.
The accused appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Sunil Scare and was not required to plead to the capital charges.
She will be at a Sophia juvenile facility, and the court adjourned the matter until July 4, 2023.
The girl is alleged to have set the fire after school officials confiscated her mobile telephone.
