In the Benediction the pastor uses the words of Numbers 6:24-26 to pronounce the trinitarian blessing on the people :
24"The Lord bless you
and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace."'
This last word of the liturgy comes from God, who is the host of the service. It is more than a prayer or a wish. By His most holy name, the Benediction bestows God's blessing on the people for the rest of the week. The Aaronic or Priestly Benediction is a uniquely Lutheran choice, yet it underscores the continuity of praise with all God's people. Worshippers may also make the sign of the cross on themselves as the pastor makes it over the whole congregation.
