8th May: World Thalassaemia Day
World Thalassaemia Day is observed every year on 8th May to create awareness to Thalassaemia patients who are battling an inherited disorder where the oxygen-carrying proteins in the blood are lesser than normal.
The body of Thalassaemia patient cannot produce the required amount of hemoglobin. This day is observed to create awareness regarding blood disease.
There is a different types of Thalassaemia such as alpha, beta, trait, carrier, inter media, or major.
As the Thalassaemia are inherited the condition sometimes runs in families. Some people find out about their Thalassaemia because they have relatives with a similar condition.

History:
In 1994, the observance of World Thalassaemia Day started by the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF).
TIF is a non-profit organisation that has been founded in 1986 by Mr Panos Englezos. He was Thalassaemia patient and their parents represented the National Thalassaemia Association in the UK, USA, Greece, Italy and Cyprus.
The day had been observed in memory of Mr Panos' son, George, who had died from the disease first time.

The theme of International Thalassaemia Day 2023 is "Strengthening Education to Bridge the Thalassaemia Care Gap".
The theme of International Thalassaemia Day 2023 is focusing on improving the skills and knowledge of the patients affected by the disease.
Significance:
The day is observed to spread awareness about the disease among people, healthcare workers, and policymakers to work on its prevention, treatment, and management.
