"It was openly declared that money earned by the honest efforts of hard working and industrious negroes was squandered in an effort to take care of the worthless element, and delicacies which are unknown to the average negro home are handed to culprits and vagabonds behind prison bars."
Houston Post (March 31, 1901)
We are told that women are attracted to "bad boys" who exhibit the "dark triad" of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, and that women themselves exhibit this "dark triad" in their pitiless exploitation of beta-schlub providers. Here is some evidence that supports this depressing proposition. In 1901, hard-working negro husbands in New Orleans complained that, while they worked, their wives fĂȘted criminals in the city jail. Having spent the afternoon slipping costly dainties to some bad boy behind bars, their wives would trudge home to sourly cook their men miserable bowls of mush or mustard greens. This sure took the shine off of respectability.
