When someone we know experiences a loss, we feel their pain, and we hurt for them. We want to reach out, and say something that helps, but finding the words can be difficult.
And yet our words can be powerful.
Examples of things we can say include:
1. "I'm so deeply sorry for your loss."
2. "There are no words. I'm so very sorry."
3. "My heart breaks for you. It's devastating …"
4. "I know how much you loved them. They were such a beautiful person. I can't imagine life without them either …"
5. "They left an imprint on our lives. It was a privilege to have known them."
6. "They are simply irreplaceable. It's impossible to fill the hole they leave behind."
7. "I'm glad you have such treasured memories. Those memories will always stay with you. They will always be a part of you."
8. "Please know I am thinking of you, and that I am here for you. You are not alone in this."
9. "It's so hard … I can't begin to imagine what you must be going through."
10. "You don't have to say anything at all …I just want to sit with you."
Others things which can help include: sharing a specific memory of the person; offering them space to talk; asking them if there is anything they need; and asking them what you can do for them.
