According to TCM, each individual is born with an essence that lasts for the duration of their life and gives their body energy. During pregnancy, the mother releases this substance. The quantity and quality of this vital substance are increased by a healthy lifestyle and nutritious diet.
The soon-to-be mom is advised to consume a balanced diet that is high in nutrients and fibre and low in unhealthy fats and cholesterol to build up this life-giving essence and ensure the best health for the unborn child. The three stages of pregnancy (each lasting three months) are aligned with TCM nutritional recommendations to accommodate the developing requirements of both the mother and the foetus. So, the TCM therapists recommend every woman in Sapphire Coast follow a strict and proper diet during her pregnancy.
First Trimester:
During the first three months of pregnancy, the baby is still forming inside the woman. It's a period of getting used to the physical and hormonal shifts. During this phase, nausea and vomiting are frequent. This is the time to consume foods that are neutral and warming (e.g. soups and stews with pumpkin, cabbage, potatoes, carrots; chicken, and salmon). Ginger is a fantastic dietary supplement that eases morning nausea and warms the spleen and stomach.
Second Trimester:
Pregnancy is regarded as a "hot" state in TCM. As the baby grows quickly in the second stage, the blood flow in the "penetrating channel" rises. An overabundance of heat and a lack of yin blood are symptoms of pregnancy (which can lead to excessive thirst, flushing, insomnia, night sweats, heartburn and constipation). Cooling foods can level out the body's heat. Vegetables like broccoli, artichokes, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, asparagus, and tomatoes, as well as salads and fresh fruits, are examples of cooling meals (e.g. mango, pineapple, banana, cherries, apples, strawberry, pear and melon.). Reduce your intake of sugar, fried foods, soy products, red meat, and other high-fat foods, particularly during this time. Caffeine and alcohol are highly discouraged during pregnancy.
A nutrient-rich diet and reinforcement meals should be consumed at this time to support the baby's rapid period of growth and development. Spring cabbage, spinach, sesame, white fungus, coconut, and legumes are examples of reinforcement foods.
Last Trimester:
Since the time of rapid growth is over, the mother doesn't need as much reinforcement food in the last trimester, but cooling foods can still be consumed along with some warm foods (but hot foods such as those listed above should be avoided).
Along with proper nutrition, expectant women should stay in shape by engaging in light exercise (such as walking, yoga, or swimming), preferably outside. Uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms can be treated safely and naturally with acupuncture and herbal therapy.
The Chinese custom of zuo yuezi (sitting out for a month) offers advice on behaviour and diet to support the new mother's recovery and adjustment to parenthood.
The growth and development of a healthy baby depend on the consumption of a sufficient quantity and diversity of nutrient-rich foods. To nourish and build Qi and Blood, promote healthy foetal development, and set the groundwork for a healthy delivery and lactation, a pregnant woman's diet should be carefully controlled. The diet of a pregnant lady should be nutritious, fresh and light, simple to digest, and able to control hunger and satiety. Foods that are forbidden during pregnancy should be avoided by a lady who is pregnant.
