Israel Judicial Reform Vs Mass Protest

Since the start of the year Israeli people have been protesting weekly to oppose their government's reform plans over legal system in the country.

As the time gone the intensity of the protests has escalated, with hundreds of thousands of people jamming the streets of commercial capital of Israel Tel Aviv along with other towns and cities across the country.

Stand point of protesters:

The protesters against PM Netanyahu have believed that the reforms might undermine the country's democracy by weakening the judicial system which historically has kept a check on the government's use of its power.

The current critics reflects that the reforms are prepared to shield Mr Netanyahu over trial for alleged corruption and help the government pass laws without any brakes.

Crisis over the legal reforms:

They concern the power of the government versus the power of the courts to scrutinise and even overrule the government.

But the government stating that reform is overdue, though the plans go much further than many people would like.

Some reforms announced by Government:

  • With a simple majority of one in the Knesset (parliament of Israel) can overrule court decisions and the power of the Supreme Court to review or throw out laws would be weakened.
  • The government will decide and say over who becomes a judge, including in the Supreme Court, by increasing its representation on the committee which appoints them.
  • Currently, ministers are required to obey the advice of their legal advisers which have been guided by the attorney general but after this they would free from this law.
  • The current ruling government has already passed one reform into law of removing the power of the attorney general to declare a sitting prime minister as unfit for office.

Postpone the reforms:

After weeks of withstanding protesters, Israeli PM Netanyahu postponed a key part of the legislation for at least month "to give time for broad agreement".
