Do you experience spring allergies? I always have, and each year I always have a little hope when spring starts to appear that maybe it won't be a tough season or maybe I'll not have issues that year, and yet I do and it seems like some days I barely wake before I'm sneezing or rubbing my eyes. The struggle sometimes makes me wish that we would go right from winter to summer, from bare branches and naked ground to plants full of leaves. But if you know anything about growing plants, you know it doesn't work like that. Instead, growing takes time. If you think about it another way, most of us don't wake up in the morning and bounce out of bed two seconds after we wake. Most of us need a little time to orient ourselves to the fact that we're awake and have another day in front of us and that we're not still asleep, right?
Our victory journeys are much more comparable to the progress of growth in spring than to the speed at which a cup of coffee brews in the k-cup maker. Spring growth is a transformation, what was dormant has come back to life in the speed at which nature knows will make it be strong and sturdy and last with as much health and beauty as it possibly can. A victory journey should make us wiser, richer (in any definition of the word), stronger, steadier, more at peace, more connected, more understanding, healthier, and better for having made the journey. I don't think we can tap into that depth and breadth if the longer passing of time is not a part of it.
So instead of wishing the spring to hurry up and be over, I'm trying to really treasure the little moments that are good, like seeing the animals return to daily activities, seeing the buds on the trees turn into little spots of color and then leaves, having the sun be warm and not just bright, and feeling the hope that comes alive with each part of nature that comes back to life. So as you walk your victory journey for however long it takes, don't be discouraged that you're being forced to grow or that it's taking time. Instead, appreciate that you've been given the gift of being able to grow at a speed that works for who you are, the situation you're in, and what else is going on in your life, so that you are given not only the best opportunity to accomplish your victory, but to do so in a way that's fulfilling, rewarding and more than just a final result that you check off a list. What lasting impact will your next victory journey grow in your life?
