Saint Lucia's Minister of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs, Moses Jn Baptiste, has pointed to what he described as an 'alarming' situation regarding cancer on the Island and has called for action.
"According to our Epidemiology Department between 2016 and 2020, approximately 280 new cases of cancer were diagnosed each year," Jn Baptiste disclosed in a statement to mark World Cancer Day on February 4.
He observed that cancer accounted for approximately 20% of deaths per year over the last decade.
Nevertheless, Jn Baptiste explained that despite the high death rates, many cancers can still be effectively treated and even cured if detected early enough.
