"The Rock Eater," by Ben Loory
Appeared in TASTE's Spring 2017 Fiction Issue (read the story online here), collected in Tales of Falling and Flying (Penguin Books, 2017), and anthologized in The Year's Best Weird Fiction, Vol. 5 (Undertow Publications, 2018, edited by Michael Kelly and Robert Shearman; won the 2019 British Fantasy Award for Best Anthology)
1,272 words
This is the second story in the Weird Fiction anthology. Similar tone to the first—"The Convexity of Our Youth," by Kurt Fawver—but a tone that's quite hard to describe, fable-ish, surreal, and detached. I thought this one had a great final line.
