Transférer de l'argent avec votre téléphone simplement en fixant l'appareil photo, payer avec votre empreinte digitale, un scan de votre iris ou à l'aide de la reconnaissance faciale… « Toutes sont des nouveautés dont l'arrivée a provoqué certaines réticences au sein du secteur marchand, observe Rustin Carpenter. Pourtant, l'usage des paiements biométriques est désormais devenu chose courante. D'ici 2026, la société KBV Research a d'ailleurs estimé que le marché de la technologie biométrique devrait atteindre une valeur totale de 18,6 milliards USD. »
Le paiement biométrique n'est qu'une des nombreuses méthodes de paiement émergentes. Songez par exemple aux désormais populaires : « achetez maintenant, payez plus tard », paiements avec QR-codes, paiements avec WhatsApp, caisses acceptant toutes sortes d'accessoires ou bien encore aux paiements en temps réel grâce auxquels l'argent se retrouve sur le compte du destinataire en quelques secondes.
De plus en plus de méthodes de paiement émergentes
« Les entreprises, grandes ou petites, se doivent de rester au courant de toutes ces tendances et de les suivre… sous peine d'être menacées de faillite. Prenons le cas de ABN Amro par exemple, qui fut détrônée par Apple Pay sur le marché des accessoires de paiement -bagues, porte-clefs et montres, etc. Une belle preuve que le marché est très instable. Quelle est la prochaine étape ? »
À l'échelle mondiale, de considérables transformations économiques se profilent en raison des évolutions des méthodes de paiement. Ce contexte est favorable à la création d'un grand nombre d'opportunités pour l'industrie, mais cela augmente également la probabilité d'une volatilité sans précédent.
L'accélération actuelle des changements dans le monde des paiements, amplifiée lors de la pandémie, se poursuit sans relâche. Enfin, les problèmes de sécurité et de confidentialité des données ne disparaîtront pas du jour au lendemain. Les contextes géopolitiques, économiques et sociaux actuels créent un besoin urgent d'améliorer la prévention de la fraude et la cybersécurité. C'est le seul moyen de gagner la confiance des consommateurs et, ainsi, faire en sorte que ces nouveaux modes de paiement continuent de gagner du terrain.
« Les organisations devront donc veiller à constamment se tenir informées des exigences liées à la conformité de leurs systèmes, estime Rustin Carpenter. Il faut que les entreprises soient en mesure d'assurer la sécurité des transactions de leurs clients, de même que la confidentialité de leurs données biométriques. Ce n'est qu'alors que les acheteurs continueront à payer avec des méthodes utilisant ces données d'un nouveau genre… »
