I have always wanted to lay my hands on this book and voila here I am making a review about the book. The book has two authors; Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles. IKIGAI which means happiness of always being busy is a book that researches the cause of the long life of the Japanese on Okinawa island. The authors have incorporated the old people in Okinawa who have lived for many years and have good health to share their secrets.
I will share what I learned from three of my favorite chapters in the book.
Chapter two: Little things that add up to long and happy life
Basically this chapter talks about the small habits that make you happy in life. For example we can have playing scramble or going for a walk in the neighborhood to be source of happy life. It is important to expose yourself to change and stepping out of your comfort zone. Taking care of your mental health is very important and a vital part in a happy life. Having mental workout such as playing games can be of help to ensure that you are healthy.
Nugget from this chapter: The secret of keeping your body young is keeping your mind active.
Chapter four: How to turn work and free time into spaces for growth
This chapter is about flow( the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else matters). They shared how to identify the state of flow, how to achieve the state of flow and activities one could incorporate to reach the state of flow.
Nugget from this chapter: The happiest people are not the ones who achieve the most but the one's who spend more time than others in the state of flow.
Chapter nine: How to face life challenges without letting stress or worry age you.
This chapter talks about resilience which is the fuel to ones IKIGAI. How far can one go for their passion? How can one persevere challenges that come in pursuit of their IKIGAI? We also have a look at antifragility, how to be antifragile in life. The chapter ended with ten rules of IKIGAI.
I loved this read would probably give it a 5/10 because the first three chapters were complex with a lot of scientific data and the history of the Okinawa people.
