When building on the land Bridget was keen to build a sustainable, energy efficient home - sustainable elements of the home include polished concrete floors for thermal mass, solar roof panels, a passive solar design with minimal need for heating and cooling.

The couple worked with a local architect Ingrid Donald on the plans.

The house's simple barn-like form was inspired by a nearby apple packing shed - a throwback to when the land was an orchard.

They have plans for an orchard area and a space to grow some of the botanicals she uses in her products at Clémence Organics

What is a Lo Tox Home?

A low tox home refers to a living environment that is free from harmful chemicals and toxins that can be found in everyday household products and furnishings. There has been an increased awareness and concern about the impact of toxic substances on our health and the environment. Many of the chemicals used in conventional household products have been linked to various health problems, such as respiratory issues, skin irritation, and even cancer.

Creating a low tox home begins with understanding the sources of toxins in your living space. This includes everything from cleaning products, personal care items, to furniture and building materials. The next step is to replace these toxic items with safer alternatives.

In the kitchen, for example, it is important to replace conventional cleaning products with natural and organic alternatives. Instead of using bleach or ammonia-based cleaners, opt for vinegar and baking soda. You can also use natural cleaning products made from essential oils and plant-based ingredients. These products not only clean effectively but also leave a pleasant fragrance in your home.

The same principle applies to personal care products. Many conventional beauty and personal care products contain harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. Switching to natural and organic products can significantly reduce your exposure to these harmful substances. Look for products that are free of harsh chemicals and made with natural ingredients.

When it comes to furnishings and building materials, it is important to choose products made from natural and non-toxic materials. For example, choose furniture made from solid wood rather than particleboard, which can emit harmful chemicals. Invest in organic cotton or linen for bedding, curtains, and other textiles. These materials are free from chemical treatments and are less likely to trigger allergies or skin irritation.

In addition to replacing toxic items, it is also important to improve the indoor air quality in your home. This can be achieved by using air purifiers, opening windows to allow for proper ventilation, and using houseplants to absorb pollutants. It is also essential to avoid using synthetic air fresheners and candles, as these can emit harmful chemicals into the air.

Finally, it is important to maintain a low tox lifestyle in your home. This includes making conscious decisions about the food you eat, the products you use, and the activities you engage in. For example, choose organic foods that are free from pesticides and chemical additives. Avoid using products that contain harmful chemicals, such as synthetic fragrances, and opt for natural alternatives instead.

In conclusion, creating a low tox home is about making informed choices and taking steps to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals. By switching to natural and non-toxic products, improving indoor air quality, and maintaining a low tox lifestyle, you can create a healthy and safe living environment for you and your family. The benefits of living in a low tox home are numerous and include better health, reduced environmental impact, and peace of mind. So, take the first step today and start creating a low tox home!
