One of the phrases that gets tossed around a lot this time of year is "new year, new you." I think it's wrong to assume everyone needs a complete redo on their lives to the point that they can say they've become the "new and improved" version of themselves. We all have room for improvement, but many of us are pretty awesome as we are. So with that in mind for the Mondays in January I want to share a few thoughts about doing more with your success in this new year, starting today with, as the title indicates, doing just one thing.
Rarely is success a one day event, usually it takes effort put in over the course of several days or weeks or even years to accomplish the level of success you were looking at when you started the journey. Often we talk about celebrating the little wins exactly for this reason: because if we waited until we accomplished the ultimate goal most of us would wait a long time to have that celebration, and if something happened and we no longer were pursuing that goal there would not be any celebrations. Which brings me to the topic for today which is the fact that along the success journey (and throughout our lives) we have days that just don't go as we want them to, as we anticipated they would, or we try to put them in the 'never to be spoken of again' pile.
My encouragement to you is to not let that day be a total waste. Instead, focus on doing one thing well or getting one thing done even if it's washing the dishes and not breaking a dish, cooking dinner and no one getting sick, reading through all your emails, taking a walk or run, or writing up a new extended timeline for your work to be completed that you think is much more feasible and a lot less pressure and stress.
And if that's too hard? Find one thing you can be thankful about in that day, like you have a pet to snuggle up with, your kids let you pick the show to watch after dinner, you have your kids in your life, you have an amazing partner, you got to read a few chapters in a book you've been wanting to read or an episode of a show, you got home safe from work and errands, you got uninterrupted bath/shower time, or even that you've got another day tomorrow to try again and do better.
And even on the good days this can be a good exercise to do to keep you in perspective and focused on making sure you do at least one thing well every day that's good for you, someone you love or your success journey. What's your 'one thing' for today?
